McDonald's New York Classic Review | Great Tastes Of America

We finally pull into the closing week of the McDonald's Great Tastes Of America promotion for 2015, with the New York Classic burger.

Arguably the least interesting of the burgers, it comes with burger, lettuce, cheese, bacon and three sauces (three!) tomato ketchup, mustard and mayo.

In my burger I didn't have all that much ketchup, and barely any mustard as the mayo seemed to be dominating them - both in quantity and flavour. The burger itself was GOOD! Just good though, the beef is nice, you could taste the bacon and the lettuce gave it a nice crisp, but I personally found there was too much sauce, and it made the burger a bit hard to handle with the rest of the ingredients slipping out.

Still a decent burger though! Interested to find out McDonald's next burger promotion.

Check out the video below to see my full thoughts.

I'd give it a four stars.

Maryland Soft Baked Cookies Double Chocolate Review

I recently tried the Chocolate and Caramel editions of Maryland Soft Baked and I surprisingly enjoyed them, so I was eager to try the other flavour, Double Choc Chunk....

I quite enjoy the texture, but it's not as good as the similar product in the market by Pepperidge Farm, this one has a slightly more cakey, less chewy texture so it doesn't remind me all that much of a cookie. Flavour wise, it is exactly as you would expect. With the double chocolate scheme it has a deep, rich chocolate flavour. It's not too bad! Three stars. Nothing more to say about it!

Nerds Rope Review

The Peeps AKA Sam Goodsell and myself recently visited Thorpe Park. We did some reviews on location, and the first one we cracked open was Nerds Rope.

Please be warned, there is an unnecessary amount of "Sucking off nerds" jokes. Enjoy the video review below.

Kool-Aid Fusion (Mixing Four Flavours) Review

I mixed up Kool-Aid - I had never even had it before trying this cocktail (or mocktail) of four different flavours of Kool-Aid; Watermelon, Black Cherry, Strawberry and Tropical Punch.

I was impressed at how colourful it made the water but terrified at how much sugar you had to put in. Seemed crazy and I don't know how it all dissolved.

Rockstar Energy Water Blueberry & Pomegranate Website Exclusive Review

Welcome to a website exclusive review, this time we look at the Energy Water from Rockstar.

In a nutshell, this is a blander, less flavoursome version (possibly a bit healthier too?) of a product that Rockstar Energy already make in their Xdurance line. It can only be given a two star rating.

Birdseye Stir Your Senses Spanish Paella Review (With Chicken & Prawn)

My good friend Jordan of Do Good Films ( https://dogoodfilms.wordpress.com/ ) recently recommended the Birdseye Stir Your Senses range to me.

So I purchased four of them! The first one I tried was the Spanish Paella with Chicken & Prawn. Check out the video for my full thoughts and some fun imagery I had in the kitchen.

Basically, it's a pretty nice, if sometimes bland paella but with some strong redeeming features in ease of cooking, texture and overall savoury-ness! It really was pretty good. If you are familiar with the Batchelors savoury rice (or similar products) you'll be at home with this product. It's impressive that they've managed to create a cook-from-frozen product that tastes so fresh and maintains a great combination of textures.

They currently (12th May 2015) seem to be on offer in all the supermarkets for about £2 instead of £3 so it's a worthwhile purchase!

It's a low four stars.

Lion Granola Review

I was surprised to see a second branded Lion Bar cereal in ASDA. This was £2.48 and came in a different sized/shaped box to normal cereal.

I've never actually tried the standard Lion Bar cereal so I don't have anything directly similar to compare it to, and thus my expectations were pretty low.

I was pleasantly surprised. The caramel flavour was alright when eating the cereal dry but seemed to be unlocked when it was steeped in milk for a minute or so. The texture is great, with a different combination and varying levels of crunch (bit of crunch).

Definitely worth checking out if it looks like your kind of thing. Four stars.

The Ultimate Mint Chocolate Tray Bake Recipe

Today we are going to be giving you a recipe for The Ultimate Mint Choc Tray Bake. This extremely easy tray bake recipe is so simple and quick to make, but it is absolutely packed with flavour, and it requires no baking! So maybe it's not really a tray bake. Here's the ingredients;

100g Butter
200g Milk Chocolate
3tbsp Golden Syrup
150g Oreos
100g Digestives
Handful of Coco Pops
200g White Chocolate
2 Small Bags Mint Aero Bubbles (or one large bag)

If you'd like to watch the method please see the below video, if not keep reading.

  • Put the Oreos and Digestives into a bag (double bag it for security), wrap it in a cloth or tea towel and bash it with a rolling pin until crumbed.
  • Melt together the milk chocolate, golden syrup and butter.
  • Add the crumbs in and mix. Pout the mixture into a greased tin (choose your size depending on thickness, but don't go too big or the top layer won't stretch out enough). I use a cling-filmed tin instead of a greased one.
  • Chill for 5 or 10 minutes.
  • Bash up one bag of Mint Aero Bubbles and pour these and the other bag on top of the base along with the Coco Pops.
  • Melt the white chocolate with a dash of peppermint essence (to taste) and swirl in some food colouring. Pour this over the top of the base.
  • Place in the fridge for 30 minutes or more.
  • Cut it up. Enjoy.

McDonald's Dallas BBQ Review Tastes Of America

McDonald's Tastes Of America hits week 2, introducing the Dallas BBQ as the offering for the next seven days.

The first thing to note about this burger is that (please brace yourself) there is no cheese. I know, I know, I was skeptical too. However, this burger does have dry cured, premium back bacon (and plenty of it....it was thick cut), BBQ sauce, Mayo, lettuce and red onions. I opted for my burger without the onions because I'm not keen on raw onions.

The combination of the sauces worked really well together, with the sweet flavour of the BBQ sauce being the main note - not a hugely smoky sauce.

The flavour of the bacon was absolutely excellent. Salty, smoky and strong. There were two pieces in there and it was thick cut, so this was really the star of the show.

The lettuce and beef - same old story, I enjoy them (well...obviously....I love beef...it's the main element of a burger) but all in all, even without the cheese, I thoroughly enjoyed the burger. I rate it a solid five stars.

Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce Review

Since filming the below video review for the Dr Pepper Sweet & Kickin BBQ Sauce, I've now consumed the whole bottle and I can actually say that it might be my favourite BBQ Sauce from a bottle.

This of course excludes Domino's BBQ Sauce which is the super-duper-mega-ultimate.

Check it out;

As I say in the video, it has a slight kick of acidity which seems to work well with the sweetness. It's not the smokiest of BBQ sauces, but it has gone extremely well with everything I've done with it. I've had it in a burger or two and yeah....really love it.

Solid four stars.

Chilly Bunny Challenge

We got too much ice from Lidl. Well actually, we got ice from Lidl and it didn't fit in the freezer, so I found myself with a load of ice. I wondered how I could use it and the answer immediately became clear - Chubby Bunny challenge but with ice cubes. The name came into my head...Chilly Bunny.

It was all so obvious, it was all so perfect...what could go wrong?

I would actually give this challenge four stars because it's easy to do, it's quick but it is high on pain and it gets a big reaction from the participant.

Lidl Praline Danish Review | Website Exclusive

Lidl have got a fantastic fresh bakery section. One of their newest additions (as of time of writing at least) is the Praline Danish, as pictured above. It looks a bit like a pain au chocolat, but on top are caramelised almonds and clusters of crispy chocolate.

Bit into the middle and it reveals what can only be compared to God-Nectar. It's a crunchy (in a really nice, caramelised hazelnut sense) chocolatey, hazelnut filling. Kind of similar to Nutella but richer.

The texture is also amazing, its smooth, velvety but with crunchy bits too. The varied texture of the top is also a treat, and the pastry itself is reminiscent of a high quality pain au chocolat.

This really is a superb product, tastes very indulgent and I would give it five stars.

Get down to your nearest Lidl Bakery and try one. They are 59p.

Hot & Spicy Buffalo BBQ Chicken Review | McDonald's

Not being the biggest fan of heat, I entered the Hot & Spicy BBQ Chicken Sandwich from the McDonald's Great Taste's Of America range with some trepidation.

I am happy to report that, whilst hot....it's nothing mind blowing at all. There is a lot to like in the other elements of the burger, such as the mayo that combines with the sauce and the nice crispiness of the chicken, however the praise is short lived.

The burger contains bacon, but it is lost amongst the other ingredients - perhaps too thin, but it did not bring much flavour. It's not a bad chicken sandwich however, but it's just...nothing all that special, and carrying a weighty price tag of £3.89, it should be a lot better. I believe McDonald's offer similar products in the pound saver type menu, so I am unsure why this needs to be quadruple the price.

McDonald's Miami Special Review | Great Tastes Of America WEEK 1

McDonald's in the UK have once again launched their Great Tastes Of America promotion. Over five weeks they release a new burger each week, and they start off with the Miami Special.

It comes with a long beef patty, lettuce, sun-blushed tomato sauce, mayo, cheese, bacon and onions. I decided to withhold the onions from my burger because I am not a fan!

The burger is pretty good! The main draw should be the sun-blushed tomato sauce. It is very sweet and slightly italian flavoured, it reminds me of a marinara sauce. This sweetness went well particularly with the creaminess of the mayo. The bacon was really lost on me, I could barely taste it but the overall combination of items in the burger was good and I think it is a decent start to the promotion.

Check out the video below for my expanded thoughts and reaction.

McVitie's Deli Choc Review

We recently reviewed the Milk Chocolate variety of McVitie's Deli Choc biscuit. We have since reviewed the Dark and White varieties, and the reviews for those will be coming soon.

This seems to be their attempt at Choco Liebniz...and it was quite good! The biscuit was not as good in terms of flavour - slight buttery flavour, very sweet but a little bit bland, however the chocolate was very good which went very well with the texture of the biscuit which had large sugar crystal crunches (or certainly what seemed like that).

Check out the video below.
